Brief; Additional study/guest room Add an ensuite to the master bedroom Replace shower room with bathroom Retain character of period property Environmental considerations to be of priority Low budget project The project involved complete removal of non structural internal walls to achieve the rewarding layout of a 2 double bed flat providing one additional bedroom/study, bathroom where there had previously only been space for a shower, and additional ensuite to the master bedroom. The layout of the flat has been re-orientated to allow living and dining spaces to maximise use of the solar gain through south facing glazing. Bedrooms are situated to the north side where direct sunlight and solar gain are inessential. The kitchen which had previously been isolated now contributes a large amount of the room heat required for living spaces and the new layout prevents the kitchen overheating which was a regular occurrence. Sustainable features include flooring comprising of 85% recycled glass and concrete worksurface, dining table and window ledges comprising of 100% recycled glass aggregate and 40% of cement being substituted for recycled alternative. The finished surfaces create a stunningly elegant kitchen and dining surface which is enduring and robust. The materiality and colour of the concrete connect the horizontal working levels to the white recycled glass floor. A glass chandelier suspended above the white concrete cantilevered dining table contributes further sparkle to the glass aggregate in the table itself. The beauty within these robust planes is cut through by the simple elevation of the stainless steel kitchen. With these simple elements the eye is left to wander over the variation brought to the space in the rugged exposed brickwork wall stretching the length of the kitchen area adding a sense of history to the place.
