Project Profile
Designer's Cabin

The prototype for g-box, a modular building system for small self-contained structures designed by SWA, was completed in 2003. The 10 sq/m building is a fully insulated plywood-clad cabin with integrated modular furniture including storage, desk and plan chest. The wall components were prefabricated off site before being delivered as a flat pack kit of parts and constructed in just one day. Wall panels were pre-wired and connected to the electrical mains once the cabin was erected.

There are several bespoke elements to this g-box including a stressed skin plywood roof and water chute clad in copper sheet, a frameless ‘pop out’ viewing window, a copper clad plan chest and two large oak sliding corner doors. These one off items represent how the standard g-box can be adapted to suit each individual’s requirements demonstrating the flexibility of the g-box system.

Further g-box projects have been commissioned and the generic g-box public launch is scheduled for 2007.
