Project Profile
Straw Bale House and Quilted Office

A sustainable house and office on a site adjacent to a railway line in north London. The design plays with the overlaps between domestic areas and work areas. The scheme introduces a number of innovative design features including the use of straw bales for the walls, loadbearing gabions and sandbags. With its investigation of low energy design principles, the scheme is being treated as a research prototype for housing in the new millenium. The project was funded and developed by SWA who occupy the building. The scheme, which includes a 16-metre high tower was completed at the end of 2000. It has won several awards and has been published extensively.
