Project Profile
Torfaen Health Learning Station

As part of Torfaen County Borough Council’s Adult Education plan, we are creating a Healthy Learning Station to equip the local community in Trevethin, south Wales, with skills for a healthy and prosperous lifestyle. The scheme will provide a flagship new sustainable building for use by the entire community.

The 900m2 facility will provide a wide variety of support and educational resources from ante natal exercise rooms and a clinic to classrooms for skills training and practical nutrition lessons and a field studies room. The building is situated around a series of courtyards with a café at its heart. The extensive grounds offer allotments and there is a greenhouse for growing plants.

Sustainability is a key feature in this project; the centre will be entirely built out of sustainable timber and will incorporate photovoltaic and solar panels as sources of renewable energy. Other ecologically sound features such as natural ventilation, rainwater storage, heavy insulation and cooling through earth tubes are included in the design.
