Project Profile
Hackney Road

At Hackney Road the challenge of providing 22 starter flats and a 10 bedroom hostel within a bustling market street has been met by creating a group of buildings which respond individually to their context and work together as a unified whole.

The public face of the scheme lies on a busy market street and the design incorporates retail units to maintain this active street frontage. Access to the flats is via a walkway over a sunken basement area which provides a subtle transitional space between the busy market and the more private residential zone and allows light to penetrate.

To the rear of the site, around a shared courtyard, the flats are set at a smaller scale, reflecting the rhythm and metre of the adjoining terraces, stair cores articulated by way of timber cladding. The project, completed in 2001, was commended in the Housing Design Awards and is featured in the Peabody Trust's Urban Design Handbook.
