Dunton Green

West Kent Cold Store Site
Sevenoaks, Kent

At Dunton Green, near Sevenoaks, we worked to develop a masterplan that embraces the surrounding habitats and increases the photosynthetic surface of the former factory site.

The development site is a disused cold storage facility and lies adjacent to the wetlands of the Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve within the defined Green Belt. To the north lies Rye Wood and to the south Prices Wood. A railway embankment forms the western boundary of the site. Grass snakes and slow-worms thrive in the calcerous grassland along the railway embankment.

Our design proposals seek to capitalise on these habitats, creating linear parks and ecological open space to act as buffer zones to the most sensitive areas and draw ‘green fingers’ in to the site. The movement strategy and hierarchy of routes follow the contours of the site and form a deflected grid, arranged so as to provide focal points and frame vistas across to the SSSI to the east.

New wetland areas along the linear parks to the north and east help to define landscape character areas, which in turn will influence the design and material treatment of the adjoining development parcels.

The proposals provide up to 500 new homes, together with a medical or community facility and commercial space.
