Melrose Gardens

Melrose Gardens is a three storey extension to the rear of a Victorian terraced house in West London which creates private bedroom and bathroom space to the upper floors and light filled reception spaces on the ground floor. The driving concept of the scheme has been the development of a highly graphic composition which offers a contemporary take on the rhythm, patterning and materialisation of the existing terrace.

The new façade balances a ‘heavy’ 2-storey vertical monolithic block form on the lightweight lintel of the garden elevation, to create a strong directional axis down and across the building façade.

Inside at ground level this composition of interlocking volumes is repeated in the arrangement of the living room and kitchen, which fold into one another. A shift in level is animated by the dual purpose arrangement of utilities; the kitchen cupboards provide a balustrade in the living room and the living room floor provides a counter surface to the kitchen. These strategic moves give the ground floor spaces greater fluidity, emphasising the directional pull to the new garden elevation.
