Project Profile
Cornish Clay Pit Eco-Town

Fraser Brown MacKenna Architects submitted design proposals for the Mid Cornwall Clay Country Eco-Town. The Eco-Town project is one of only four locations nationally chosen to be given Eco-Town status, and approximately 700 hectares of former industrial land has been chosen to provide a demonstration of sustainable development.

The Eco-Town Pilot Phase will comprise approximately fifty homes of different types and tenures that will be used as prototypes for the wider development, which will include community facilities and a visitors centre.

Our design proposals centred around concepts of sustainable construction, locally sourced materials, a low carbon footprint, the utilisation of natural environmental conditions for energy production and respect for Cornish vernacular traditions.

The house designs emphasise flexibility, allowing the residents to adapt their home according to changing needs, rather than seeing the reisdent move out of the community to more suitable accommodation. A "pick 'n' mix" approach was proposed for building and garden features to allow residents to customise their homes according to individual needs or tastes.
