Project Profile
EllisMiller House

A low cost self-build house using an innovative kit system.

Designed and built by and for Jonathan Ellis-Miller, this house uses a simple steel portal frame to create an elegant and extremely liveable glass and steel pavilion. The core open plan area can be subdivided to create a series of different layouts according to residents’ needs and its cool Modernist aesthetic is the wellspring of many of the practice’s projects ever since.

The external skin of the house is a mixture of large glass sliding panels and highly insulated steel infill panels that create a thermally efficient building. Its south and west facing facades are clad with integral external shading in order to provide overheating from solar gain, and privacy for residents inside.

“An elegant low cost house.”
Hugh Pearman, Sunday Times

“An interplay with the needs and emotions
of human habitation.”
