Sandon Barns

A conversion of a large Grade II listed barn into a light and spacious modern home.

At Sandon Barns we retained two of the most desirable aspects of barn-living: a sense of space and openness, and intelligent juxtaposition of retained structures and modern additions. The design carefully preserves and enhances the existing fabric of the barn while making a number of carefully considered interventions that provide contemporary living facilities.

A grand double-height living space forms the heart of the house, which is subtly divided elsewhere to accommodate an open study mezzanine with a focal-point hearth and an elegant gallery staircase. A generous light-filled kitchen at the rear of the barn enjoys extensive views across the surrounding fields.

Finalist, Grand Designs Awards 2008
